Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Material:

  • Engineered wood flooring contains a plywood or high density fiberboard (HDF) base with a wood veneer finish on top.

Benefits:

  • This material is significantly less expensive than solid wood yet retains many of the same benefits, making it ideal for many households
  • It excels in moisture resistance and stability making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, concrete subfloors, and in properties with radiant floor heating systems.
  • Engineered wood flooring is more versatile, however, depending on the thickness of the top veneer it can only be refinished 1-3 times.

Benefits of Harwood

Timeless aesthetics:

  • Hardwood has natural beauty to it. It has a feeling of warmth, elegance, and high character that never goes out of style and always just feels good to come home to.  A crackling fire with hardwood floors is too good to be true on many winter nights in the Inland Northwest.

Versatility:

  • It is highly compatible with almost all design ideas. Because there are so many types of wood, colors, grain patterns, levels of hardness, consistencies, and designs, hardwood works great with almost every scheme.

Long term investment:

  • Studies show that around 70% to 80% of hardwood flooring cost can be recouped in residence value appreciation. Additionally, it helps make home sales faster. A buyer may not like a carpet in a residential property and decide to rip it out, but wood is a reason to buy the property in the first place.

Durability and longevity:

  • Because of hardwood’s durability, it can be sanded down and refinished multiple times. This means after decades of kids, grandkids, and pets marking up a hardwood floor, it can be refinished and look brand new. To have century old hardwood floors is not uncommon.

Sanitary:

  • Hardwood floors do not trap dust, pet dander, or mold making it ideal for allergy sufferers. If you can see it you can clean it. The only low maintenance cleaning you need to do is a simple sweep and gentle mop to remove and trap particulates making it a healthier, more sanitary living environment.

Sustainable choice:

  • Hardwood is the most abundantly renewable flooring material available. Growth of hardwoods is faster than the rate of removal, making it an excellent environmental choice. Additionally, when hardwood is toward the end of its life cycle, it is often recycled into many new projects.

Wood Flooring Characteristics

Each species of wood has different levels of hardness. Harder woods (white oak flooring or hickory hardwood flooring) offer better protection against damage from wear, scratches, and impact. Softer woods (white pine wood flooring or black cherry wood flooring) cost less and have a more rustic look.

Colors range from white pine to Brazilian cherry, but in Spokane, white oak hardwood flooring has been especially popular.

Ascending from softer to harder woods here is an example of common wood planks:

  • White pine
  • Black cherry
  • Black walnut
  • Red oak
  • White ash
  • White oak
  • Cypress
  • Maple
  • Hickory
  • Brazilian chestnut

Thickness:

  • Thicker wood flooring can be resurfaced and refinished more times while thinner wood floors can still be recoated. Common sizes for thickness are ½”, ⅝”, and ¾”.

Length and Width:

  • Hardwood planks are typically 3’ to 3.5’ long. For a small room consider shorter planks for a larger feel. For general installation, longer pieces are more seamless.
  • Wood planks are either ¾”,2 ¼” wide, or 6” wide. Each has advantages and disadvantages, talk with us for more information and ideas. You can even mix and match width sizes.

Wood Types:

Solid hardwood flooring is exactly that. It’s cut from one solid piece of wood and is more expensive, but can pay for itself with simple maintenance and comes as either finished or unfinished.

  • Finished solid wood flooring is ready for installation since they come already sanded, stained, and finished.
  • Unfinished solid wood flooring is more customizable and is sanded and stained on site.
